Puff the Magic Dragon by Peter Yarrow & Lenny Lipton

Title: Puff the Magic Dragon

Authors: Peter Yarrow and Lenny Lipton

Illustrator: Eric Puybaret

Genre/Theme: Fantasy

Characters: Puff the Magic Dragon and Jackie Paper

Summary: This book is an illustrated tale of Puff the Magic Dragon, the folk song that has been popular for decades. The lyrics are the text and the pictures depict Jackie Paper and Puff and their whimsical adventures in Honalee. They encounter pirates and other dangers until Jackie comes no more. Poor Puff retreats to his cave but the illustrations show that there is a young girl ready to pick up where Jackie left off.

Commentary: This is a lovely story with simple text and beautiful pictures. The book also includes a CD of Peter Yarrow's famous song and two others. The pictures really make this book and capture the fantasy and adventure of the original song.

Age level appropriateness: enjoyed by all ages, 2rd grade reading level (because of some unusual words)
