Summary: A story of friendship across a racial divide. Clover, the young African-American narrator, lives beside a fence that segregates her town. Her mother instructs her never to climb over to the other side because it isn't safe.
Comments: This book is wonderful and easy to read. I think its easy to understand and it explain how segregation existed.

I like this story because it informs students about one of the dark sides of our country's history, but also shows how it is possible to cross the "fence". This idea is still very applicable in many communities around the world (and even Chicago) today.
